Coming from Tornado Alley, this hurricane business is a sham - though I don't actually live on the coast. My thoughts would surely be different if I lived in Galveston or Matagorda. Anyway, Houston is still dry for the most part, and business goes on as usual. I start work bright and early on Friday at 7 am. That will take some getting used to. 7 to 4 everyday will be an early morning, but also an early exit from the grind. Maybe I can avoid the rush hour traffic that way - yeah, whatever...

** Party of the Rich **

According to Byron York over at National Review, the idea that Republicans are representative of the wealthy caste while the Democrats are beholden to the common man is a misconception - a non-reality.

He says:

"A new study by the Center for Responsive Politics found that in the last election cycle, people who gave less than $200 to politicians or parties gave 64 percent of their money to Republicans. Just 35 percent went to Democrats. On the other hand, the Center found that people who gave $1 million or more gave 92 percent to Democrats — and a whopping eight percent to Republicans."

** A Savage Station **

It seems that radio talk show host and MSNBC personality Michael Savage was fired from the cable TV network today. Apparently he made comments towards a gay man wishing he would catch AIDS and die.

I have never watched his show or listened to his radio program, so I have no basis to judge the man. However, from what I have read about him, he has always come across as a very hateful person - very angry and spitefull without any viable solution or thoughtful commentary on political affairs.

People like this need not be the standard bearer of the conservative movement, and should be shunned if he/she cannot make valid arguments that hold any water without resorting to cliche' or ad hominem attack. For some reason Ann Coulter comes to mind. In my opinion, to behave in the manner that these people do does a disservice to the conservative movement. They fit the mold, so to say, that the liberal minded folks thrust on the rest of us. I don't fit that mold, and most conservatives I know don't either.

However, sometimes we need the extreme among us to define the mainstream that is us.

Hillary Clinton has modeled her carreer after Lady Thatcher, or so she says via Drudge. This makes me want to vomit - repeatedly.

She has obviously neglected to mimic such traits as honesty, integrity, compassion, and a moral code.

Mark Steyn does some number crunching. Here's the "money quote":

Perhaps if Gray Davis had been a responsible leader this would not be the case. Perhaps the recall effort is a good thing - though I wouldn't want to be the person who replaces him...

**Daddy Warbucks**

Jonah Goldberg (my favorite columnist, by the way) brings up an issue that I, and I think many conservatives, believe to be a serious snag in the President's conservative ideaology.

Where does the spending stop? Is there a limit to "Compasionate Conservatism"?

I'm not much of a "social conservative", and I think Dubya could have let the Senior Prescription Drug campaign promise quietly slip away. He has plenty of political capital to choose his battles.

But instead of taking a stand against this grossly unmanageable monstrosity of legislative mush, he has thus far merely sat on his hands and claimed credit for the end result - much like the Education Bill of 2001.

The Federal spigot must be shut off. Compassion is a virtue, but realism is a neccesity.

Is he a bastard for showing disrespect?...yeah.

So the word on the street says that Howard Dean is making leaps and bounds in fundraising towards the Democratic Nomination for President. Apparently he is making all the right moves within his party base.

This makes me smile!

His leftist leanings will alienate the middle, IMHO, and guarantee a Bush 2004 victory. (Not that GW would lose to Kerry or Gebphart either)

** Surprise Surprise Surprise **

It seems as if some local factions of the various Palestinian terrorist groups are not living up to the cease fire agreement made over the weekend.

The article includes a statement by Sharon saying that some groups may have not recieved word of the cease-fire, and therefore should not be blamed. This is a big step for Sharon. He is obviously willing to make some major concessions regarding the "road-map to peace". Good for him.

However, the attack was made upon a Hungarian truck driver. Since when are alien workers responsible for the "oppression"?

I guess we all are (as usual)...

As an expert in restaurant operations, I know that I need to focus some energy on improving the presentation of this site. That time will come soon. ** The Hunt Is Over **

I've taken the job in Houston that I nefariously refered to in a previous post. I start work there in three weeks. Although I must take a pay cut compared to my last "real" job, I have much more opportunity for advancement. I am also facing a cost of living (housing alone) that will take half of my take-home pay. Ugg. Anyway, I hope it works out.

** State Budget Woes**

I noticed a trend tonight while reading the Tulsa World. Two separate programs recently funded by the State have lost their funding due to budget cuts. However, due to the percieved community need of these projects, two different private enterprises have stepped up to provide the funding for these failing projects.

It seems to me that things are getting back to the status quo of old. The private sector is picking up the tab for local social programs.

This is a good sign. The more decentralized social programs are, the more personal investment they will get.

As the economy continues to recover, we should stress the importance of corporate responsibility. I say let the private enterprises compete for the job as social provider, and let the local governments focus on what they do best...ensuring our security as a people by providing a voice of reason

** Movin' On Up **

OK, so I was trying to update this blog with a personal post about my recent job hunting exploits, but my computer did not agree with me. Sometimes, my computer (recently named HAL by my roomate) likes to reboot on a whim regardless of my own desire. In summary, all that I had written is gone. One of these days, when I get the job I was previously writing about, I will rebuild my computer so that this problem will end.
